Beginning in 2015, Senior Scholar Rania Antonopoulos served as alternate minister of labour in Greece, member of parliament, and, more recently, ambassador for Greece at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Her professional experience includes appointments at the UN-Women’s headquarters as a macroeconomic policy advisor; expert advisor to various United Nations organizations; senior scholar and director of the Institute’s Gender Equality and the Economy program; professor of economics at New York University; visiting scholar and guest lecturer at the Shanghai Academy of Social Science; and visiting professor at Barnard College of Columbia University.
 
Her policy-oriented research and advocacy has focused on the macroeconomic results of job guarantee policies and their implications for economic recovery, gender equality, and poverty reduction, and on the construction of a new poverty indicator that highlights the importance of time-use in estimates of poverty and inequality. As a Levy Institute senior scholar, she led a team of Institute researchers studying the pro-poor growth and gender equality impact of job guarantee policies for South Africa, India, Mexico, and Greece across multiyear projects supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Government of Mexico, the Ministry of Labor, and the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Greece (INE-GSEE). Finally, together with a team of Institute scholars, she developed a new statistical measure of income and time poverty, the Levy Institute Measure of Time and Income Poverty (LIMTIP), which uncovers the further inequalities time deficits impose on households’ earned income and living standards. The LIMTIP has been empirically applied to the study of poverty in Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Korea, Turkey, Ghana, and Tanzania in collaboration with respective national statistical agencies and experts.
 
Antonopoulos holds a Ph.D. in economics from the New University School for Social Research. During her academic career, Antonopoulos authored scientific papers, policy briefs, book chapters, and published three books: An Alternative Theory of Long-run Exchange Rate Determination (VDM Verlag, 2009); Unpaid Work and the Economy: Gender, Time Use and Poverty in Developing Countries (coeditor; Palgrave Macmillan, 2010); and Gender Perspectives and Gender Outcomes of the Global Economic Crisis (editor; Routledge, 2013).
